As a race, humans have always been fascinated by the healing and metaphysical properties of crystals. Quite why that is no one seems to know for sure. Perhaps it is because we can somehow tune into the subtle energies emitted from them, or are drawn to them for other reasons we are, as of yet, blissfully unaware of.
Legend has it that Atlantis was once powered by crystals; so much so that the Atlanteans could generate enough energy from them to move huge objects in an instant, power entire cities as a matter of course and ran all of their transportation, communication and technological devices of the time on nothing more than crystal technology. Hardly surprising really when you take into consideration the fact that even today we utilize them in a lot of our own technology as well.
Sadly, misuse of the power harnessed from a select number of "special" crystals is blamed for the destruction of this ancient and highly developed civilization. Along with this inexcusable destruction came lost knowledge on the "true" power and potential of crystals. There is hope though, famed "sleeping prophet" Edgar Cayce told us that 3 sets of records pertaining to life in Atlantis are still in existence; the most famous of which is located in the great hall of records that lies under one of the paws of the Sphinx in Egypt.
The only downside is that these records will not be found until such time as is deemed right by the higher powers of the universe. Something I fear could be a long time in coming judging by the manner in which most people are content to systemically rape planet Earth of late.
Other ancient civilizations such as the Chinese, Egyptians, Sumerians, Greeks and Romans held crystals in equally high regard, albeit for completely different reasons. Who knows, perhaps Cayce is correct in his predictions and we shall once again learn the "true" nature of their power and the latent potential that lies inherent within each one at a later juncture in time.
At a time when we have evolved into spiritually enlightened beings perhaps; that can make use of them with pure intention rather than for selfish or ulterior motives. But for now, let's look at what little we do know about them. For one thing, they are credited with great healing powers on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level that can not be rationally or scientifically explained; much like most things Spiritual.
True, a great many Shamans, witch doctors, healers and religious and spiritual leaders seem to possess an inner knowing of their unique powers without a need for further explanation. But for your average layman it takes intention and intuition to fully understand the unique powers these gemstones and minerals are reputed to bestow upon us.
Thankfully, those of us deemed to be on the spiritual path are often more able to tune into these subtle energies a lot easier than your average layman. Especially the more balanced and in tune with our spiritual side we actually are at the time of their use. Fortunately, there are even crystals out there that help us tune in to our spiritual side as a matter of course. Take Kyanite for example, this blue stone has the energy to instantly align all of our seven major chakras simply by holding it in our hand or by wearing it around our person.
Others such as the multi-coloured Agate cleanse and stabilize our aura by removing and/or transforming negative energy from it whilst Amethyst, the most precious stone of the quartz family, is widely recognized as helping people enhance their psychic abilities, purify their blood stream and strengthen their immune system. Moreover, it is regarded as one of the best stones for the opening of the Third Eye.
Stones such as the greenish or black Nebula, the vibrant Opal and the violet or purple Charoite help with meditation, past life recall, astral travel and clairvoyance. But every crystal comes with its own unique range of abilities. For example, red Carnelian and the brownish Tiger Eye help strengthen, heal and protect the wearer from a multitude of sins; whilst brown Jaspers are believed to significantly boost the immune system, help clear toxins from the body and absorb negative energy as easily as sugar dissolves in a hot cup of coffee.
But the first step in owning a crystal is deciding what stone to go for. The best way to do this is just look at what's on offer and then see which one "sings" to you. I do this by putting my hand over whatever crystals I am looking at, making a point not to have any physical contact with them at this stage, and see what energy I pick up from them. The one that gives off the strongest energy is usually the one most needed by us at any given time. Remember, just as our personal needs will change from time to time, so should our crystal of choice.
Alternatively, you may choose one depending on what your own particular needs are at any given time. For example if you work alongside negative personalities, or are in an abusive relationship, then it would make a lot of sense to purchase black Tourmaline as it deflects and transforms any negative energy that is around you.
Note however, that some stones such as the green Aventurine and black Onyx need to be worn over a long period of time before you start to notice any real change as their power develops rather slowly. Others still need to be worn with caution as they can do more harm than good if worn too often, or at the wrong time for your particular purpose. A good example of this is hematite; widely recognized as exacerbating all sorts of inflammations if placed or worn near them. Thankfully though, almost all stones have terrific healing properties if properly applied. What's more, the vast majority of stones have a great many secrets latent within them waiting patiently to be rediscovered by the likes of you and I.
Finally, be mindful of sudden changes in the colour of your crystal of choice; as that means they are trying to tell you something. For instance Garnet starts to lose its luster when there is impending danger or disaster around you, Jade lightens around illness and Turquoise starts to fade when a relationship is coming to an end. The most pleasurable thing about crystals though is discovering all this out for your self. On that happy note; I wish you well on your path of discovery.
