Uri Geller
Uri Geller is one of the world's most investigated and celebrated mystifiers. Famous around the globe for his mind-bending abilities,
he has led a unique life shrouded in debate, controversy and mystery.
Having interviewed various famous personalities from different walks of life it has been a real challenge to try to quantify Uri Geller – if
such a thing is possible – in one small article because we are trying to encapsulate a man who has been mentioned in over 1,250 books alone!
Spoon bender, mystic, inspirational speaker, jewellery designer, writer, friend and acquaintance of too many famous people to name; long-term and loyal friend to Michael Jackson and John Lennon, soldier, artist, peace negotiator, his talents are endless. To say that he is interesting requires an entirely new definition of the word.
Yet what motivates him? What is important to him and why does he do his work? We thought we would try to get behind the glitz and glamour and find out a little about the man.
To an outsider the Jewish religion seems to be one that defines those born into it for their whole lives. Do you feel that this is the case?
Absolutely; I am a religious man who believes in and prays to God. I have also studied the Kabala, a Jewish scripture that is more than 1000 years old which speaks of the mysterious symbolism from the universe and beyond. It is quite extraordinary if you really study it. Believing in God and the afterlife definitely influenced me but I also look at it from the scientific point of view.
I am a huge fan of Albert Einstein who wrote E=MC2. With that equation Einstein proved that the entire universe is made from energy and energy vibrates, it has a frequency.
An even bigger discovery is that energy cannot be destroyed, therefore one must ask the question “when we die what happens to our energy, our soul, our spirit?” Through these studies I am a great believer that there is no end to life, it goes on in a different dimension. Einstein also had amazing sayings and one of the most powerful was “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious, it is the source of all true art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed.”
In that one sentence he summed everything psychic, mystical and paranormal. Sceptics and those who don’t believe were challenged by one of the greatest scientific minds of all time. He also said that “The only really valuable thing is intuition.”
Tell us about your unusual power of spoon bending? Did it come as a shock?
It did to my parents, for some reason my mother thought the talent was inherited from Sigmund Freud. I am glad that this talent developed when I was too young and open minded to have built a barrier around my belief system.
Did you consciously use and develop your talents?
Yes, I pushed myself out of necessity because my mother was very poor and I promised her that I would be rich and famous one day and I would be able to stop her from working; I really wanted to be able to be able to buy her a television set. This is why I believe in the Law of Attraction, everything I wished for was happening and coming true even though I couldn’t have possibly understood consciously at that age what was going on.
What have you come to believe about the Law of Attraction?
I now believe and understand that the universe cannot distinguish between good or bad it only recognises one law, it will send back what you send out. If you send out negative thoughts it will send negativity right back to you. Obviously these are my theories and a lot of people will laugh at me, but I have been controversial all my life and yet I just went with the flow.
Has the controversy been hurtful?
Of course it has but I hold on to something Oscar Wilde said many years ago – “There is only one worse thing than being talked about and that is not being talked about”. I have discovered in the last 40 years how right he is.
You fought in the Six Day War in 1967. Can you describe how it felt to go to war? How did it change you and has it influenced your feelings about Spirituality and ongoing life?
The experience has stayed with me ever since. The hardest thing was that I had to overrule the Ten Commandments; I had to shoot a Jordanian soldier face-to-face. He jumped out from behind a rock and was going to shoot me. We looked into each others’ eyes. Suddenly time stood still.
My entire life reeled through my mind like a movie in those few short moments, my parent’s divorce, my mother being forced to have 8 abortions - I am her 9th child and she knew she had to have me – in a split second I woke up from this trance and knew instantaneously that whoever pulled the trigger first would survive.
I couldn’t understand or comprehend what I had committed. I took his identity card and in the coming half hour I was shot twice. The last wound knocked me unconscious and I woke up in hospital in Jerusalem, and that’s when it hit me that I took the life of a living person. He haunts my nightmares to this day. He is in my soul and he is now my brother, I know I will meet him one day.
At that time I already believed in life after death, and I knew what I had committed and it complicated my life for a while. I became obsessed with guns and Frank Sinatra and I were the only two people in New York licensed to carry 8 guns on our person.
Then I then became obsessed with fame and fortune. I made a lot of money and became the most famous person in the world because I was unique. That became an obsession with eating but I was terrified of becoming fat and developed Bulimia. I was a mess and it was John Lennon that saved my life. He said I looked like an Auschwitz survivor and I told him that I had nothing in my life even though I had everything. He told me to go to Japan and find Spirituality; only Spirituality could save me.
I gave up everything and took my wife, my mother and my brother-in-law and we went to Japan, hired a van and disappeared into a forest under Mount Fuji for a year. I learned to meditate, exercise, relax, and I found Spirituality in nature. Being with my family in such a remote and unique environment, living in a wooden hut, and being in touch with nature saved me.
Many people understand the term psychic, could you explain telepathy to us and if you feel it differs from Psychic ability?
That’s a very good question. I think that Psychic means Psy – the mind, and I think that telepathy, psychic power, remote viewing all fall into the area of the paranormal. You could also call it Extra Sensory Perception. My telepathic skills were validated in scientific experiments that took place in Palo Alto California.
What is Psychokinesis?
It is a Greek word for moving objects from a distance. If you scroll down on my website you will see a CIA film, this will show what I have done in this field scientifically. I think everyone has telepathy I’m not unique.
Can anyone be taught to do what you do?
I’ve seen children do amazing things and I’m imitated by a million magicians but overall it’s very rare to find Psychics or Paranormalists who can actually demonstrate Psychic powers under scientific research conditions.
You have taken part in a number of scientific experiments where your abilities were measured and your success registers in terms of billions and trillions to one. Have you any idea why that is?
No I do not understand why some people can do one thing and not another. For example, I am not a Medium and I don’t know why.
Have you ever met anyone like you?
Yes, I have a very successful television show that’s been televised live in 17 different countries and is about to start in the Ukraine. In every country I find someone who has a special skill or talent that sometimes even I don’t understand. I just let it go and allow myself to be entertained and mesmerised and I don’t ask how they do it.
How has your work enhanced your life?
In so many ways. I felt that my shows were always amazing and tantalising and astonishing but there wasn’t enough educational material in them, they were all about me.
Then I thought “Hey, I’ve got a very unique advantage, I’m famous” so I went to work with terminally ill children. I use the spoon bending as a placebo effect, because it amazes them so much that it gives me the platform to talk to them about positive thinking and inspiration.
The other day parents of 34 children who have terminal cancer flew in from Israel to meet me; that was very special.
Your books are free on your website, why is that?
I have enough money now so I allow people to read my books free, I also get questions every day so I am able to direct people to my website, although I answer all emails personally even from my mobile phone if I’m away.
There is a rumour that you inspired part of the first Matrix film, how did that come about?
I inspired the scene where Keanu Reeves walks into the Oracle to see children levitating objects and one bends a spoon. That scene was inspired by my work because I’m the person who brought spoon bending into the world.
How did you become famous in the UK?
It was David Dimbleby of the BBC who made me famous, he heard that I was being studied by scientists and invited me onto his show. For some reason I just looked into the camera and said “everyone go and get a spoon or fork” and 10 million people did it.
You design your own jewellery for QVC and it is certainly unusual. Is there a mystical input into your designs?
Very much so; they all have a story. Firstly they’re all golden rock crystals that are over a million years old – which are used in computers and watches, even NASA used them I believe. I create the jewellery with passion and love. I instil energy into each article. I also spoke to Elizabeth Taylor about the designs, some of which are based on jewellery she wore in the film Cleopatra. I include Celtic motifs which represent the interconnectedness of love and life. I tell people to use them as tools for the mind. Be positive, be motivated, and use them to make dreams come true.
So they are a real Uri Geller design, with real gold, real rock crystal and a motivational meaning and story. All the crystals are flawless which are difficult to find and very rare.
What is important to you Uri, what matters the most?
Family.
What motivates you to do your work?
The love of life and people who admire me. I communicate with the world, I teach people, I stop them from smoking, I inspire them to be positive. That’s what makes me happy.
Finally, what would you like to be remembered for?
I don’t care because life doesn’t really end it goes on in the afterlife. My mother is buried in our local village next to the church, and when I stroll in the cemetery I see tombstones so weathered you can barely make out the name; even if my name is etched in stone it will still ebb away one day.
The things I do worry about are war and hunger, the death of children from starvation, but not worrying how I’m remembered frees me to be who I am. I just go with the flow of life and accept my destiny.
