Hello friends,
I was talking with a friend recently who attends a regular spiritual meeting, when another attendee became the subject of discussion. “He’s far more [spiritually] advanced than me,” she said.
“Comparisons are very limited,” I told her, and attempted to use this example to explain my comment.
The two things in others that exude ‘a sense of spirituality’ are:
1) A clear recognition of someone having gained insight through their words and actions.
2) Congruence between the two (walking the talk and talking the walk)
Insights come from life’s experiences, once contemplated through one’s life philosophy / view on the world. To compare someone’s insights with yours is naïve, as each person has gained their insights as a result of their own unique, individual life experience. Someone else’s insights would not apply to yours.
Your spiritual growth depends on:
a) Applying your own flexible (maturing) philosophy to your life’s experiences to gain insights
b) Developing congruence (in respect of your insights and spiritual values) with your thoughts, expressions, words and actions.
Our goal in life – our spiritual growth – is to reconnect with the Sacred Truths within our soul. Connections to these Sacred Truths are recognised (re-cognised; re-known) as insights (inner sights).
The soul – the seat of knowing – is the doorway to all that is known (the Akashic Records, the collective consciousness etc.), and is the place where we connect with all that is.
A spiritual teacher once said, “The degree of spiritual growth can be measured by the extent to which there is lack of thought.” These are wise words. It is the mind that lives off inquiry for information’s sake that we must be wary of. If you read a hundred books, it is your mind that saves up all of this information. However, it amounts to nothing in terms of your growth if that is all it provides. To grow spiritually, one’s life must be consciously contemplated as one’s spiritual practice. When one comes across an insight, several bits of information resonate. Insights transmute bits of data into wisdom.
Think less, be your own witness, and let your thoughts be your benchmark.
Namaste, John
